With apologies to the vegetarians, one of the most exciting country activities of the current season is wild boar hunting.
There are quite a few Dolce Vita Villas country houses which either have their own estates or are nearby reserved hunting areas where shoots are organised. Tuscany, Umbria
and other hilly and wooded areas have become re-populated with the antecedent of the domestic pig, so much so in some parts that the owners of gardens, orchards and vegetable patches have to construct boar-proof fences to keep the animals out. Boars just love to go rooting around in the soil, and there’s nowhere better to root than a perfectly cultivated and watered lawn!
Some hunters just like to go off on their own and track down an individual animal, and a satisfying experience that is too, but for those who don’t have their own land on which to do this, an organised shoot is the answer. Being Italian, a very convivial and sociable activity that becomes – you can see this from the video below. A great day out for all the family, with food, wine, country air, barbeques and even the chance to argue about who shot the biggest animal – endless fun.
The shoots are organised like most animal shoots, with beaters ushering the animals towards an array of fixed positions from which the hunters can shoot, and with safety in mind, shoot just the animals and not each other. After each beat, the dogs are summoned to seek out any wounded boars so they can be despatched and collected. After a few hours when the sport is exhausted, everyone gets together to sort out the kills, butcher the beasts and share out the spoils, but of course no opportunity to eat and to party can be wasted, so the families will light up the barbeques and bring out the best they can offer for the general good. For most of the participants, that’s the best part, and all will have enjoyed a healthy day out in the country. You can tell – just look at the video! Looking to organise a hunting tour in december, who can i contact for details??
I would suggest you contact The Hunting Report at http://www.thehuntingreport.com as they are the best for reliability for their reviews on hunts worldwide. Don Causey is the editor. He has been on some hunts in Italy with companies that cater for English speaking clients.
The best part is getting rid of these breeding machines that cause us problems. In the states there are also a large population of boar that need to be hunted. Lets do our country a favor and dwindle the numbers and enjoy a yummy meal at the same time.
My family of course comes from that area of Italy but now we hunt wild boar in Louisiana any time we want to. I’m an outdoor writer for http://www.foremosthunting.com known as Uncle John. We can tell you there about wild boar hunting anywhere in the world.

I would like to go boar hunting. Can you please send me information on where and how to make these arrangements? Thank you
Dear Salvatore,
the boar hunting should start on November 1st and continue until January 31st 2010. Some of the villas we rent also have a game reserve where it is possible to organize boar hunting. Just to mention a few: Villa Farneti and Il Mirto in Tuscany, borgo di Poreta in Umbria and so on….
